Accessibility — CareerTryOut
CareerTryOut is built by KDEP Enterprise, LLC. We believe career exploration should be available to everyone, and we are working to make the app usable with the assistive technologies built into iOS and Android. This page is an honest snapshot of where we are today, what we are actively improving, and how to reach us if you hit a barrier.
If you encounter an accessibility issue, please email [email protected] with the device, OS version, assistive technology, and a short description of what went wrong. We read every report and prioritize accessibility fixes alongside bug fixes.
1. Standards we aim for
Our target is WCAG 2.1 Level AA for content and interaction patterns, adapted to the native mobile platforms (iOS Human Interface Guidelines, Android Material accessibility guidance). We have not completed a formal third-party audit yet — the statements below reflect our own ongoing internal testing.
2. Features supported today
Differentiate without color alone
We do not rely on color alone to convey state or meaning. The
Compare Careers grid marks the leading career on each row with an
emoji and bold weight in addition to color; tied values use the
"≈" symbol; salary differences are shown as percentage text
(for example +12%) rather than a green or red bar.
Quiz selections and mission progress use icons and labels in
addition to color.
Text contrast
The primary palette (indigo on white, white on indigo) targets WCAG AA contrast ratios for body text. Some secondary metadata (timestamps, helper hints) uses lighter grays — if any text is hard to read at your text size, please report it and we will raise the contrast in the next release.
System settings the app honors
- System text scaling — React Native respects the operating system's text size setting by default, so the app's text grows when you increase it in Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size (iOS) or Settings → Display → Font size (Android).
- System language — the app uses your device language for system-provided controls (date pickers, alerts, sign-in sheets).
3. Known limitations we are actively working on
We are not done. The following are tracked as work items for upcoming releases:
-
VoiceOver and TalkBack — most interactive
elements have basic labels, but several emoji-only buttons
(drawer items, slot pickers, expand/collapse chevrons) need
explicit
accessibilityLabelvalues andaccessibilityRoleannotations. A full screen-reader sweep is planned for the next minor release. - Voice Control (iOS) and Voice Access (Android) — these features rely on the same label coverage as screen readers, so they will improve in the same pass.
- Very large text sizes — at the largest system text sizes (Dynamic Type AX3–AX5), some fixed-height rows (the "At a glance" snapshot, Compare grid rows) can clip. We are converting those to flexible heights.
- Reduced Motion — the app does not yet branch on the Reduce Motion system setting. Screen transitions and the splash animation play unconditionally. We will gate non-essential animations on this setting.
- Dark interface — the app currently ships a single light theme. A dark theme is on the roadmap but is not a near-term release.
4. Features not applicable
- Captions — the app contains no spoken-word video or audio dialogue. Two short non-speech sound effects (mission complete, badge unlocked) can be silenced in Settings → Sounds inside the app.
- Audio descriptions — the app contains no time-based video content that would require audio description.
5. Reporting an accessibility issue
We want to hear about anything that gets in your way. Email [email protected] and include:
- Your device (for example, iPhone 15, Pixel 8, iPad Air)
- The operating system version
- The assistive technology you were using (VoiceOver, TalkBack, Voice Control, larger text, etc.)
- The screen or action that did not work
- What you expected to happen
We acknowledge accessibility reports within 5 business days and include progress updates in our release notes when fixes ship.
6. Formal status
This statement is provided in good faith based on internal testing. It is not a third-party-audited conformance claim, and it reflects the app as of the "Last updated" date above. We will revise this page as features are added, fixed, or removed.
